Founded by Nancy Lublin, CEO of DoSomething.org, Crisis Text Line provides free and confidential 24/7 emotional support for those who are dealing with a wide range of issues – bullying, self-harm, sexual assault, suicidal thoughts and more. Since 2013, their crisis counselors have processed over 9 million text messages and saved countless lives by practicing active listening and helping people in crisis move from a hot moment to a cool calm – all through a medium they know and trust: Text.
Crisis Text Line is not a replacement for therapy, which includes a diagnosis made by a doctor, a treatment plan of action and a patient/therapist relationship. Crisis Text Line helps people in moments of crisis find calm and create an action plan to continue to feel better through three types of crisis counselors: Rigorously trained volunteers who graduate from a 34 hour training program; Partner organizations that are experienced and well-equipped in crisis counseling; and Supervisors who oversee CTL crisis counselors to offer guidance and support in high-risk conversations.
Most importantly, Crisis Text Line was established to help anyone, anywhere, anytime. Simply text “start” to 741-741. A real, live, trained crisis counselor will receive your text and respond quickly. If your cell phone plan is with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or Verizon, texts to the CTL short code are free of charge and nothing will appear on your bill.
