As San Francisco’s only 24-hour supportive residential service, A Woman’s Place (AWP) offers emergency shelter and long-term treatment programs to women and transgender women with special needs due to mental disabilities, sexual or domestic violence, drug or alcohol abuse, and HIV/AIDS-related issues. Specialized programs include a shelter program, an 18-month transitional housing program, and the CARE program for primarily African American women and transgender women with HIV. Services may also include health care, mental health counseling, case management services, and money management. The facility serves adult women of all ages and ethnicities who feel they have nowhere else to go. At A Woman’s Place, individuals receive the structure and support needed to acquire permanent housing, stable income and, if possible, gainful employment.
